Jyu-Oh-Sei

I might evolve this post into a full review but for now I just want to say that this anime is definitely worth a watch. (the subbed version at least - the dubbed is awful)

It's about a boy named Thor as he has to try and survive on a planet full of maneating plants and tribes of hostile people. His twin brother Rye dies in the first/second episode and the story focuses on Thor's distress and the people he meets.

I finished it yesterday (then had to rush out for a friend's party) and wasn't sure what I thought of the ending, but now I have had a day to think about it I think that it is a very good anime with an action packed ending and quite a touching one too.

The whole series is 11 episodes long and it does seem very rushed but I definitely prefer that over the long-winded animes which just drag on through 100 or more episodes *cough* Inuyasha *cough*

Quick Claymore moment

Ep 8... OH MY GOD... Did you see that coming?... I didn't see that coming... if you haven't got to the episode yet... be warned...

not even half way through and it's shaping up to be an action packed, exciting thrill ride that's for sure. Watch it :)

*edit* Ok, beginning of episode 9... didn't see that coming either!... and that link should have been obvious!

Paprika

I watched the dubbed
It's a movie, and there is no sequal, prequal or original manga
10/10 - it was insane but brilliant
Themes: Thriller, science fiction, horror, drama, god complexes, psychological

I watched this film as it was suggested by a friend who then bought it for my birthday. I just got around to watching it and, although at first it was just weird, it soon becomes a mix of fantasy and horror as the main character, Dr. Atsuko Chiba, delves further into the mystery.

It's about a new device called the DC mini which was created by a large genius. It allows the user to go into their own dreams. The problem arises when someone steals a headset and starts using everyone's dreams against them. The only person who seems to be able to stop this is Paprika, a red head with a lot of energy.

If you get the chance, and you're bored, and you want to watch a real mindwarping anime then go see this film!

Saiunkoku Monogatari

I watched the dubbed and then a little of the way through I could only find subbed – both were excellent
39 episodes
2 seasons
10/10 – it had just the right mix of romance, action and mystery
Themes: Romance, Conspiracy theories, Drama, Action, Historical, Comedy

I thoroughly enjoyed this series and immediately after watched season 2 (which is coincidentally called Saiunkoku Monogatari II).
Saiunkoku Monogatari is quite a girly series – set in old Japan when everyone travelled in carriages and sent letters to each other rather than using phones – it’s generally about a girl: Shurrei, who is independent, strong and generally a nice girl. The story begins with her being sent to the palace to become the Emperor’s wife but she resists this placement and instead sets out to teach the Emperor a few things in the way of duties to his kingdom. Soon it becomes obvious that the Emperor (Ryuuki) really likes Shurrei and thus their relationship begins… or so I thought. After the first few episodes Shurrei leaves Ryuuki and goes back to her old job at the local school, and the story truly heats up as she fights to become the first ever female official of the Kingdom, with help from a few friends.

The characters are all really likable, to start off with there is:
Shurrei – the main character
Ryuuki – the Emperor
Seiran – Lived with Shurrei and her father after they found him years ago (although as you can probably guess there’s a lot more to his story than is first explained)
(I will add pictures later, html is ticking me off right now)

Later on you meet:
Ryurren (my favourite)
Eigetsu
And many, many more.

That's it for this review: I did not write about the episodes as I watched the series (like I usually do for my reviews) due to lack of being awake; so I do not have an epi by epi guide to this series.

Clannad (no epi by epi)

I watched the subbed
24 episodes
2 seasons; 1 movie
6/10 - too lovey-dovey; not enough action
Themes: School/family/real life, Drama, Supernatural, Relationships, psychological

This was one of those girly series with that classic Love Hina storyline (boy meets girl, then another girl, then another girl then another... well you see where this is going) in the end there's always one girl who he gets with in the end and the other girls never seem to mind. This series has been remade a few times, one of which has a different love interest outcome to the original series.

I have only watched the first series from start to finish and all I can say is that: "it was OK". The main character is Tomoya, who has a very dull sad life until he meets Nagisa. In every episode I wanted something to happen between Tomoya and his father (who he hates). He keeps talking about how his father hurt his arm one drunken night but you don't ever get to see some proper scrapping between them. Their relationship with one another, like many other things is skirted over loosely so they have more time to expand the many relationships Tomoya has with the many girls. Unfortunately 24 episodes just wasn't enough to truly make a deep story, but when you're caught up in the moment you don't tend to notice until after; it will all be over and you'll suddenly have a lot of questions in your mind unanswered.

Here's a good rundown of most of the main characters:

That all said it was a tear jerking story, even more so in Clannad - an after story, and I admit to have cryed quite a bit when my favourite character died/moved on (and for this reason I will not be telling you who my favourite character is)

If you are a fan of the love hina genre but prefer more real life drama where action doesn't happen every few seeconds then this is the series for you, otherwise I suggest leaving it be.

Oh! I almost forgot... there's also this weird side story going on in this strange run down house (and occasionanlly in a field): it involves the characters shown to the left, and made no sense. I am led to believe it makes more sense in one of the remakes and I bet that in the manga it makes perfect sense, but like everything else this plot line is not developed much.

Kaze no Stigma

I watched the subbed
24 episodes
1 season - but open for another
9/10 - because the ending was left at a bit of a "... erm, i guess... that's ok" moment
Themes: Supernatural, Comedy, Drama, Relationships

Kaze no Stima is about a boy called Kazuma who was born into the Kannagi family - a family which harnesses the power of fire. However Kazuma, grew up afraid of fire and could never use it which led to him being disowned by his father. The story begins when Kazuma returns home after being gone for 4 years and his family are suprised to learn that this hopeless boy had become a master of wind.

The main bulk of the story focuses on Kazuma's relationship with his (I hope distant) cousin, Ayano. It also looks at Kazuma's affection for his little brother Ren who is very powerful with his fire (more so than Ayano me thinks).

I thought this series was particularly good comapred to other animes following this same storyline because the main character was not an annoying brat (like Naruto) and he had already got his power before the series started (below is Kazuma when he uleashes his true power as a "contactor" which is always awsome)

Epi by Epi
Now here's an episode by episode run down; the episodes which I think are particularly good are coloured in red:

1
This episode is a good opening and introduces all the main chacters and their reltionships, and hints at the power thet Kazuma now posseses

2
Kazuma faces his father and his wind power is shown to be extremely powerful, also his relationship with his brother Ren is explored

3
Ren is kidnapped and Kazuma is determined to save him

4
Kazuma shows his contractor ability for the first time

5
Kazuma is once again shown to be powerful and calm when it comes to fighting

6
Pretty much continues on from episode 5 as Kazuma deals with a girl who in the last episode recieved power to defeat him

7
continues on from episode 6

8 - filler
The head of the Kannagi family tries to encourage Kazuma and Ayano's relationship by employing Kazuma to be her bodyguard as Ayano and her firends go and investigate a rumour of a ghost in their school

9
Ren gets a crush on a girl, Ayumi, he meets in a park, and rescues her when some guys in black suits try to take her by force (for unknown reasons)

10
Ren continues his attempt to save Ayumi, and something devious is shown to be happening in the house that Ayumi belongs to

11
The rescue continues, however Ren now has the help of Kazuma and Ayano

12
Emotional ending to this plotline

13 - filler
The head of Kannagi orders Ayano and Kazuma to go to a theme park

14 - would be a filler if not for the introduction of Katherine
Kazuma and Ayano, while out having a fancey meal meet Katherine McDonald - from an American clan of fire users. She orders Ayano to relinquish the title of "mightiest Enjutsushi" and thus a battle ensues

15
Katherine develops feelings for Kazuma and hires him to be her tutor for her upcoming fight with Ayano - Ayano is very jealous

16 - filler - but a funny one
Almost all the characters go to a spa, where Kazuma sees his dad for the first time since their fight in episode 2. Funny episode as Kazuma and his dad fight every time they see each other

17 - filler
Final plotline starts here. A school pervert is beaten up by the girls he was taking pictures of but then recieves some power of his own and reeps his revenge. Kazuma sees something which shocks him

18
Kazuma, Ayano, Katherine, Ren and other minor characters investigate the mysterious rise of average shool children with extraordinary powers. Ren is kidnapped after discovering the bad guys hideout

19
Kazuma and Ayano go and rescue Ren

20
Looks into a portion of Kazuma's 4 years away, and his relationship with the now (presumed) deceased Cui Ling, who seems to have been cloned/resurrected/brought back by the villain, as a girl called Lapis. Kazuma goes crazy

21 - filler
Kazuma is determined to find the villain: Burnheart, and is killing people to get answers - crazy for revenge. Also the pervert of episode 17 appears again as the most powerful person in Burnheart's evil plan

22 - filler
Kazuma continues his rampage and even Ren can't stop him. Both Ayano's friends are kidnapped by Burnheart

23
Ayano fights Kazuma to try and help Kazuma regain his old self

24
Final fight betwen Kazuma, Ayano and Ren against Burnheart and Lapis

To get the ball rolling

So, this is my first blog of what I hope to be a regularly updated blog.

To start off, I am going to write my first blog on Kaze no Stigma as this is the most recent anime I have finished.

Hope you have fun reading
